Less well known is that for a twenty-year period Williamson was a contributor to the prestigious American literary magazine Atlantic Monthly, with contributions including examples of his nature sketches, short stories including perhaps his best, 'A Crown of Life' , and tales of his later experiences when farming in North Norfolk during the late s and the early years of the Second World War.

Central to the collection is 'Salar the Salmon', a condensed version of Williamson's best-selling novel which successfully preserves, in the Atlantic's phrase, the 'pulse and vitality' of the original. Now collected for the first time, this makes a perfect anthology of Henry Williamson's work.
